K.G.F: Chapter 1 is a 2018 Indian Kannada-language period action film[5][6] written and directed by Prashanth Neel, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner Hombale films. It is the first installment in the two-part series, followed by K.G.F: Chapter 2. The film centers around Raja Krishnappa Bairya “Rocky”, born into poverty, who arrives in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the 1960s, on a quest for power and wealth as desired by his dying mother. Involved with the gold mafia there, he is recruited to kill Garuda, the oppressive heir-in-waiting, in Kolar Gold FieldsYash stars as Rocky, while Ramachandra Raju features as Garuda. Anant Nag narrates the film while also playing a supporting role alongside Srinidhi ShettyVasishta N. Simha, Ayyappa P. Sharma and Harish Roy.
The development of the film began in early 2015 when Neel completed writing the screenplay.[7] However, filming began only two years later, in March 2017.[8] Majority of the film is set in Kolar Gold Fields and was filmed on location.[9] Bhuvan Gowda served as the cinematographer and Shrikanth as the editor. Ravi Basrur scored music for the soundtrack and the film’s background.[10]
After a North American premiere on 20 December 2018, K.G.F: Chapter 1 was released in Kannada and in dubbed versions of HindiTeluguTamil and Malayalam languages the following day, and received positive response from audiences.[11] However, critics gave the film mixed reviews; while they praised the cinematography, art direction and background score on the film, the screenplay and editing were criticized. The film performed well commercially and collected ₹76 crore four days into release, in the process breaking the record for the highest grossing Kannada film of all time.

Production

As of 25 June 2017, the project was 50 percent complete and production had restarted after sets were rebuilt following their destruction by heavy rains.[17]
KGF was released in five languages. It is a complete period drama and is set in the 70s and early 80s. Yash plays the role of Rocky, a slick and a suave person of the 70s era. Apart from Yash and Srinidhi, some of the Kannada actors include Ananthnag, Malavika Avinash, Achyuth Kumar, Vasishta N Simha[18] and B Suresha. Ramya Krishna and Nasser are expected to join in later schedules.[19]
The teaser of KGF was released on the Yash birthday (8 January 2018). The trailer was released on 9 November 2018.[20][21][22]

Soundtrack

Ravi Basrur composed the music and background, while Tanishk Bagchi remastered the track “Gali Gali” from Tridev (1989) for the film’s Hindi version.[23] Lahari Audio, that acquired the rights for ₹3.6 crore, a record sum for any South Indian film, distributed the soundtrack album into the market.[24] All versions of the first track of the album, “Salaam Rocky Bhai”, was released on 4 December 2018.[25]

Release and reception

K.G.F: Chapter 1 received U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification in early December 2018.[26][27] The distribution rights for the Kannada version were bought by KRG Studios, a sister company of the film’s studio Hombale Films. While Excel Entertainment and AA Films bought rights for the Hindi version, the Tamil version’s rights were sold to Vishal Film Factory, Telugu to Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram and Malayalam to Global United Media.[28][29] The film was released in the U.S. and Canada on 20 December 2018 and in India the following day.[30] The day also saw releases in parts of Africa, Hong Kong and parts of Eastern Europe including Cyprus, the first in these regions for a Kannada film.[31] It was reported that the film would be released in 1,800–2,200 screens worldwide, the widest ever release for a Kannada film.[32][33][34] However, it was later reported that the film was released in 2,460 screens, that included 1,500 for the Hindi version, 400 each for Kannada and Telugu, 100 for Tamil and 60 for Malayalam.[35] The Hindi-dubbed version of the film was released in 71 screens in Pakistan on 11 January and became the first Kannada film to be released there, although Lucia (2013) was screened at film festivals and did not see a theatrical release in the country.[36][37]

Critical reception

Upon theatrical release, K.G.F: Chapter 1 received positive response from audiences while critics gave the film mixed reviews.[38][39] While its cinematography, art direction, narration, stunt sequences, background score and acting performances received unanimous acclamation from the critics, they directed criticism and praise at the screenplay, dialogues and editing in equal measure.
Reviewing for Deccan Herald, Vivek M. V. felt that that the “grandeur” lay in the film’s “fantastically gripping story”. He wrote praises of the film’s narration, its “brilliant” editing and “riveting sequences”.[40] Sunayana Suresh of The Times of India gave the film rating of three-and-a-half out of five and wrote that it had a “fast-paced first half … but the second half and the climax sets up the right premise for the second part of the film.” She called the screenplay narrated in a “non-linear” fashion the “most interesting part of the film”. She commended the performance as Yash in that he “lives his character to the fullest”.[41] Troy Ribeiro of News18 echoed her sentiment and wrote, “Yash’s endurance, strife and sincerity … get projected as perfunctory” in the context of “tight close-ups and mid-shots the camera stops us from getting emotionally connected to” every actor in the film. He further wrote, “With intense atmospheric lighting, every frame in the film looks aesthetic and natural. Brilliant cinematography and equally challenging action sequences are put together with razor-sharp edits. They give the film a racy pace.”[42] The reviewer for Hindustan Times, Priyanka Sundar, called the film a “story of greed and redemption” and remarked that it “burns bright”. While praising the “promising” background score, “sharp” editing and “stunning” visuals, she felt that the screenplay could have been “tighter”.[43]
Janani K. of India Today felt the film was “dragged and over-stretched” and gave it a three out of five star rating. While she commended Yash’s “extraordinary performance” and the “brilliantly choreographed stunt sequences”, she wrote that despite having “universal theme, [the film] gets lost in translation, thanks to sloppy editing and atrocious dialogues.”[44]Subha J. Rao of Firstpost gave the film a similar rating and praised the film’s music, cinematography and art direction; particularly the latter in “bringing alive the grime and heat of the gold mines”. However, she felt “[t]ighter editing … would have smoothened out the kinks” in the film.[45] Shashiprasad S. M. of Deccan Chronicle scored the film a two-and-a half out of five star rating and described the film as “a visual spectacle”. Barring that, he felt it fell short of “instilling the much needed life into it.”[46] Karthik Keramalu of Film Companion felt that the film fell short “becoming a great movie by a long mile”. He dismissed the dialogues delivered by Yash’s character as “lengthy sermon about his own valour”, while also criticizing the film’s editing.[47]
Excepting what he described the film’s climax as “spectacular with the support of a brilliant cast” and “spot on” sets and location, Muralidhara Khajane of The Hindu felt there was “nothing in the film that we have not seen before”. While writing that “[t]here is a certain finesse to the edgy, moody cinematography”, he concluded that the film lacked a “soul, a believable story and a rounded protagonist.”[48] Manoj Kumar R. of The Indian Express scored the film two-and-a half out of five stars and deemed it “[a]n overstretched exercise in hero worship”. While drawing comparisons of certain scenes to those from Baahubali, he felt the film had a “flimsy storyline”, which he added is made up for by “terrific background orchestra”.[49] Also writing for the same news publication, Shubhra Gupta drew comparisons of the film in plot to those of NayakanDeewaarParinda in its first half. She felt that the film had “nothing more” than “striking cinematography, and the brown and sepia colours which suffuse the screen”.
Critic’s Rating: 3.5/5

Rocky is an ambitious boy, who wants to die as the richest and most powerful man. From the streets of Bombay to the fields of KGF, he embarks on the mission. And his tale is being retold by a journalist who chronicled his life in the 1980s.
Prashanth Neel’s KGF, which stars Yash in the lead, has become arguably the most spoken about Kannada film nationally. The expectations have been enormous. Does the team deliver? Yes, they do. The film has a fast-paced first half, which does seem a little long, but the second half and the climax sets up the right premise for the second part of the film.
The screenplay is the most interesting part of the film. The non-linear pattern keeps the viewers engaged, with the growth of Rocky being shown in a steady fashion. While there are a fair share of scenes and dialogues that bring out the hoots and cheers from the masses, the makers have still maintained a clever story telling pattern that assures one to also keep pace with the narrative. The film traverses from 1951 to 2018, while maintaining a sense of curiosity as each character is unveiled.
Adding the extra edge to the film are the cinematography, art direction and the locales. Everything looks top notch and one is often left spellbound at the scenes. Be it the dark dreary world in KGF to the more glitzy nightlife scenes in Bangalore, all of them are shown beautifully. Yash, as Rocky, lives his character to the fullest and his screen presence definitely has the viewers cheering alongside him. The ensemble cast play their respective parts, with each of them playing minor building blocks in setting up Rocky’s character.
The narrative in the first part builds the character of Rocky as the maverick mastermind who will not stop for anything until he reaches his mission. While there is a sense of temporary closure in the first chapter of the film, one also leaves the hall yearning for more. KGF surely seems to have delivered what it set to achieve.
Ambitious aspiration, humongous scope and big ticket budgeting — K.G.F. Chapter I has it all. Actor Yash has sought to shed his romantic hero image for a heavy-duty action hero avatar. However, all the pluses do not translate to an enjoyable experience. Director Prashanth Neel’s hope of pouring money on the screen in the hope of things falling in place is exceedingly optimistic.
Neel loses the plot as he focuses on image building rather than coming up with a credible tale. Raja Krishnappa Beria aka Rocky takes on the big bad world of gold smuggling. After stopping Inayat Khalil from establishing his fiefdom in the bullion black market in Mumbai, Rocky is sent back home to cross swords with Garuda, who runs the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) with an iron hand.
The plight of the enslaved gold diggers in KGF distracts Rocky. He, however, steels himself to achieve his objective, successfully setting up for Part II.
Despite taking one back to the 70s and 80s when smuggling was almost a rite of passage for the good life, with well-designed sets and black-and-white photography, the film fails to live up to expectations. Filmmakers need to understand that wielding a machete and thundering dialogues do not make a powerful film. Yash goes about his task like a zombie, never rising above the poor script.
The film’s format of a writer telling Rocky’s story to the editor of a TV channel is unconvincing. By using a non-linear structure Neel has provided a different feel and texture to K.G.F. Chapter I. There is a certain finesse to the edgy, moody cinematography (Bhuvan Gowda). Audience will be lost in the world of the gold fields of the 70s. Neel proves again that he is master of the craft. There are sequences where three scenes run simultaneously. The director has used VFX, and the effort to go on location is evident.
As far as the colour scheme is concerned, Neel and Gowda have used black and brown for a raw feel.
The climax is spectacular with the support of a brilliant cast. The sets and locations are spot on. Beyond that, there is nothing in the film that we have not seen before. It lacks soul, a believable story and a rounded protagonist.
Yash’s, KGF is one of the most awaited films in South India. With good expectations and solid pre-release buzz, the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see whether it lives up to the hype or not.
Story:
Determined to emerge as a rich person, Rocky(Yash) leaves his native village in his childhood and lands in Mumbai. Soon after landing there, Rocky grows step by step and becomes a notable name in the crime world. This is the time when Yash gets an offer from Bangalore to kill a big wing from the Gold mining area, KGF. Who gives the offer to Rocky? What will Rocky do to face that mighty personality? How is the KGF area connected to Rocky’s childhood? To know this, you have to watch the film on the screen.

Plus Points:
Star hero Yash is the biggest asset for the film. His stylish looks and mass mannerisms are a treat to watch on the screen. The amount of hard work he has put in to deliver the best in action sequences is quite impressive.
The hero introduction and two action blocks which come during the latter half of the film are designed nicely with mass elevations. Heroine Srinidhi Shetty is cute and performed decently in her limited screen presence. Milk beauty Tamannaah’s glamour show in a special song will attract the youth audience.
Minus Points:
Apart from Yash’s energetic screen presence, the film has a slow-paced narration which is a major drawback for the film. Initially, after a few hero buildup scenes, the audience will be eagerly waiting to know what the film is all about but director takes his own sweet time to unveil the plotline.
Once again, after the core point is revealed in the second half, the proceedings become dull with flat narration until the pre-climax which is another minus for the film. All the characters which come into the story do not have proper justification.
Lack of commercials elements like comedy and eye candy duets between the lead pair will also disappoint the audience big-time.
Technical Aspects:
Director Prashanth Neel totally misused the given opportunity as he failed to deliver a good product. Having a star hero in hands, Prashanth should have done wonders using Yash’s popularity but he limited it to a few built up shots. If he would have concentrated more on script and narration, the result would have been much better. Production design and the artwork is nice as the sets in KGF are super impressive.
Editing work by Shrikanth is okay but he could have trimmed the second half close to fifteen minutes. Cinematography by Bhuvan Gowda is good as he captured the rustic look of KGF area nicely. Music is not up to mark as no song in the film has a proper tune. Background score is okay. Production values for this high budget film are good.
Verdict:
On the whole, KGF does not live up to the colossal expectations laid upon it. The film is a regular crime drama set up in an interesting backdrop. Yash’s screen presence and stylish looks are good but the lack of interesting storyline and slow-paced narration makes it a boring watch this weekend.
